Officially, the military calls this Pierced Steel Planking (PSP) or Marston Matting. But anyone who grew up near a surplus center or an old airfield knows its real name: Tetanus Mat. Growing up near an Air Force base, I saw this stuff everywhere. It was the universal \"problem solver\"—if you had a hole in the ground, a muddy patch, or needed a fence in a hurry, you just threw some Tetanus Mat over it and called it a day.
The \"Rust on Rust\" Realism
I’ve modeled this to capture that authentic, neglected surplus look. In the real world, this stuff was always rusty—it was like they grew rust on top of the rust.
Innovative Material: To get that perfect gritty texture and deep matte finish, I’ve printed these using a specialized Wood-Infused PLA. It gives you the high-fidelity look of oxidized steel, though I have to admit, it makes the shop smell more like a fine cabinet shop than a junkyard!

A Note from the \"Ditch\"
I’ve encountered this stuff in the most unexpected places—usually while trying to dig a ditch for an electrical job only to find a layer of Tetanus Mat buried three inches underground! It was used for everything from aircraft tie-downs to heavy-duty flooring for equipment sheds. Adding these to your layout adds a layer of rugged, industrial history that tells a story of surplus and \"make-do\" engineering.
