This is a true HO scale structural steel system designed to model something you almost never see on model railroads:
a building under construction.
Not a finished warehouse.
Not a completed parking garage.
But the exposed steel superstructure you see on real job sites every day — columns, beams, open floors, and raw structure waiting for the next phase.
Scenes like this are everywhere in real life and almost never modeled. Adding one instantly makes a layout feel more modern, more believable, and completely different.
What this structure can become
This superstructure is intentionally generic and adaptable, just like real-world steel framing. Depending on how it’s arranged and what you add later, it can represent:
a new hospital under construction
an apartment or mixed-use building
a large warehouse or Amazon-style distribution center
a modern office building
or any other commercial or industrial structure still taking shape
There is no single intended outcome. The same steel frame can plausibly become many different buildings, which is exactly how real construction works.
Multiple Steel City sets can be combined to create larger footprints, taller buildings, or more complex layouts. You can go wider, go taller, or both.
Authentic job-site appearance
All parts are molded in a red steel primer color, matching the protective primer used on real structural steel when it arrives on a job site. Leave it as-is for a realistic construction look, or weather and finish it however you like.
The finished model is intentionally an in-progress construction project — exposed steel, open framing, no walls, no cladding. This is structure first.

This listing provides a base supply of HO scale structural steel components, sold the same way real construction materials are sold — as parts, not a locked-in plan.
Includes:
10 HO-scale steel I-beams, 38-foot length
40 HO-scale steel I-beams, 18-foot length
25 side-outlet angle connectors (L)
25 side-outlet T connectors
5 double-cross connectors (X)
50 beams total, plus connectors.
Everything shown in the photos can be built with the material in this set, with parts left over. Photos show example configurations and suggested build sequences — not a required design.
All beams scale to realistic real-world proportions (approximately 1′ × 1′ structural steel), so the structure reads correctly at HO scale.
How it’s designed to be built
After testing multiple approaches, the cleanest method is:
build one floor at a time
start in the center bay and work outward
begin with the top floor and work down, building upside down
This keeps glue joints hidden on the underside of the beams, so there are no visible glue marks on the finished structure.
Small alignment pieces are included to help keep everything square and level during assembly.
Customization is the whole point
This is not a fragile display model. It’s meant to be worked with.
Beams are easily cut to custom lengths using common hobby methods, allowing non-standard bay spacing, partial floors, offsets, or entirely original designs. Many builders start with longer beams and cut their own custom sizes — just like real structural steel.
