O-Gauge Vintage Service Station Tire Machine by Cinder Shops
After we finished painting the lube rack blue, the boss usually found a stray bucket of red paint for the rest of the shop. This tire machine was the primary beneficiary. It was an old, temperamental piece of equipment that ran on nothing but pure compressed air—no hydraulic fluid, just raw pressure.
In my memory, changing tires was the second worst job at the station, trailing only behind cleaning the bathrooms. There was always that split-second \"thrill\" when you were seating a bead, wondering if the whole thing was about to explode and send you to St. Peter’s gate a few decades early. Shop-Worn Authenticity
I’ve modeled this after the classic air-driven changers that sat in the corner of every station. It’s printed in a bold red that looks great as-is, though a little \"grease\" weathering really brings out the character of a machine that’s seen its share of bias-ply tires.
A Note on the Tools
I’ve included a set of tire irons and bars based on my best recollection of the shop floor. They might not be blueprint-accurate to a specific 1950s patent, but they’re the best my memory could do for the tools we actually used to wrestle with those rims. You can lean them against the machine, toss them on the floor, or even hang them up on your gas station wall to show the \"guys in the shop\" are ready for the next customer.
